I’ve just finished this book, and I’m sitting here wondering how to start a review that does it justice. It’s no easy task.
This is the first time I’ve read an advanced copy of a novel before its official publication, and I feel incredibly grateful and privileged to have had the opportunity. Joining NetGalley was one of my best decisions, alongside investing in a Kindle to fully immerse myself in books like this.
I started reading this book just 24 hours ago. By 2 a.m., after three hours and 25% of the way through, I reluctantly set it aside—my eyes heavy, dry, and bloodshot. Tonight, after tackling the day’s chores, I picked it back up and devoured the rest in one sitting. In total, it took me about four hours to finish, and I was utterly hooked.
From the very first page, this book grips you and refuses to let go until the end, leaving you wanting more. Freya Wallace has crafted something extraordinary. The writing is superb, and the characters feel so real and well-researched. With its tightly woven, compelling subplots, I was completely transfixed from start to finish.
Set in the dark, brooding landscapes of Dartmoor, the story follows Detective Inspector Jacob Knox—a troubled but brilliant soul navigating a complicated life. He has a budding love interest, an alcoholic older brother who constantly stirs up trouble, and a cheerful, loyal dog who brings some light to his world. When two women go missing, Knox dives headfirst into the case.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say this is Robert Harris meets Fred West, but it does carry certain elements that make it a chilling and dark horror novel. At the same time, it’s surprisingly uplifting and inspiring, taking readers on an emotional rollercoaster.
This is a true page-turner that will leave you craving more. It’s a short, fast-paced novel that packs so much into its pages. If you have four or five hours to spare, grab a copy as soon as you can.
Freya Wallace’s debut novel is a triumph, and I feel so privileged to have read an advanced copy. It’s an easy five stars from me, and I can’t wait for the next Detective Inspector Jacob Knox story.
Happy reading!
